Tech Talk Glossary
Struggling to keep up with all the tech and design lingo? You’re definitely not alone. New terms pop up every five minutes, it feels like a full time job just keeping track. So I’ve put together a glossary that breaks everything down in plain English and easy to understand. Think of it as your cheat sheet to all the words the cool kids throw around, so you can follow along with confidence.
2FA
An extra verification step when logging in. Stands for Two Factor Authentication.
301 redirect
A permanent redirect from one URL to another.
404 page
A page shown when the URL doesn't exist.
Abandoned Cart
When a customer adds items to their cart but leaves without completing the purchase.
Above the fold
Content visible on a web page without scrolling down.
Accessibility
Making sure your website can be used by everyone, including people using screen readers or keyboard navigation.
Action
The step that follows a trigger in an automation.
Add to cart
The button customers click to select items they want to purchase.
Adobe Creative Cloud
A subscription service with Adobe's design tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
AI
Technology that performs tasks that usually require human intelligence. Stands for Artificial Intelligence.
AI (.ai)
The editable working file for Adobe Illustrator, used for vector graphics. Stands for Adobe Illustrator.
AI Agent
An AI system that can take actions and make decisions autonomously to complete tasks.
Algorithm
A set of rules a computer follows.
Alt Text
A short written description of an image that improves accessibility and helps search engines understand what the image shows.
Analytics
Data about how people use your website, like visitor numbers, behaviour, and traffic sources.
Android
Google’s operating system for mobile devices. If it's not an iPhone, it's an Android
Animation
Movement added to visual elements.
Antivirus
Software that protects against threats.
API
A structured way for two systems to communicate and exchange data. Stands for Application Programming Interface.
APNG (.apng)
An animated PNG format that supports transparency. Stands for Animated Portable Network Graphics.
App
Short for application, it’s software that helps you do something on your phone, tablet or computer, like email, banking, social media or booking a class.
Approval workflow
A process requiring review or approval steps.
Art direction
The visual approach and style of a creative project.
Artboard
A canvas within design software where you create layouts.
Ascender
The part of a letter that extends above the height of lowercase letters.
Aspect ratio
The proportional relationship between width and height, like 16:9 for widescreen video.
Asset library
A folder of reusable design assets.
Automation
Technology that completes tasks automatically based on rules you set.
Aux cable
A cable with a 3.5mm jack used to connect audio devices like headphones or speakers.
AVI (.avi)
An older video format with larger file sizes but good quality. Stands for Audio Video Interleave.
AVIF (.avif)
A modern image format with smaller file sizes and higher quality than JPEG, though not supported everywhere yet. Stands for AV1 Image File Format.
Back end
The behind the scenes server-side of a website or application that are hidden from the user. Usually only has admin access.
Backup
A copy of your files or data saved somewhere safe so you can restore everything if your computer, device, or system goes wrong.
Bandwidth
How much data can transfer through your internet connection at once.
Baseline
The invisible line that most letters sit on in a line of text.
Beta
An early test version of software released to find bugs before the final launch.
Bleed
Extra image area added for printing so designs reach the edge without white gaps.
Blog
A section of a website with regularly updated articles, posts, or news.
Bluetooth
A wireless technology that connects nearby devices like headphones, keyboards, or speakers.
BMP (.bmp)
An older uncompressed image format with very large file sizes. Stands for Bitmap Image File.
Bookmark
A saved shortcut to a webpage so you can easily return to it later.
Bots
Automated software programs that perform tasks on the internet, like search engine bots that scan websites or chatbots that answer questions.
Bounce rate
The percentage of visitors who leave your site after viewing only one page.
Brand guidelines
A detailed document that outlines all brand usage rules.
Brand identity
The visual elements that make a brand recognisable.
Brand kit
Stored brand elements like colours, fonts, and logos.
Brand refresh
A light update to an existing brand.
Branding
The overall identity of a business, including visuals, tone, and messaging.
Brandmark
A symbolic or graphic element of a logo without the text.
Breadcrumbs
Navigation links showing where you are on a website, like Home > Shop > Products.
Browser
The app you use to access the internet, like Chrome, Safari, or Firefox.
Browser Extension
A small add on that adds features or tools to your web browser, like password managers or ad blockers.
Bug
An error or flaw in software that causes it to behave unexpectedly.
Cache
Temporary website files your browser saves to help pages load faster next time.
Call to action
A button or link encouraging action.
Canva
A simple online tool for creating graphics.
Chatbot
Software that interacts with users through text or voice.
Checkout
The process of completing a purchase.
Chrome extension
An add on that expands Google Chrome.
Clearing Cache and Cookies
Removing saved website files and tracking data to fix loading issues or reset your browsing experience.
Client
A customer or person you're doing business with.
Client portal
A private online space where clients can access information.
Cloud storage
Storing files online so you can access them from any device, like Dropbox or Google Drive.
Cloud-Based
Software or files that live online instead of on your computer.
CMS
A system that allows you to edit and manage website content. Stands for Content Management System.
CMYK
A colour model used for printing. Stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black.
Collection
A group of related products/projects displayed together on a page or online store.
Colour palette
The main colours a brand uses.
Colour Theory
The rules for how colours work together and the emotions they create.
Component
A reusable design element that appears across pages.
Composition
How elements are arranged in a design to create balance and flow.
Conditional logic
Rules that change what happens based on input.
Contact form
A form visitors fill out to send you a message directly from your website.
Content block
A reusable layout section for pages.
Contract
A legal agreement between parties outlining terms, responsibilities, and expectations.
Contrast
The difference between elements like colours or sizes, used to create visual clarity and emphasis.
Conversion
When someone completes the action you wanted them to take, like buying a product, submitting a form, booking a call, or signing up to your list.
Conversion rate
The percentage of users who complete an action.
Cookie Policy
A legal notice explaining how a website uses cookies and tracks user data.
Cookies
Small files a website stores to remember things like logins, preferences, or items in your cart.
CPU
The processor (aka the brain) that handles computer tasks. Stands for Central processing Unit.
Crawling
When search engines send bots (called crawlers or spiders) to explore your website pages, follow links, and collect information so they know what your site is about.
Creative direction
The overarching creative vision guiding a project.
CRM
A system for organising and managing customer information. Stands for Customer Relationship Management.
Cross-sell
Suggesting related or complementary products to add to a purchase.
CSS
Code used to style and format web pages. Stands for Cascading Style Sheets.
CSV (.csv)
A simple spreadsheet format used for importing and exporting data. Stands for Comma Separated Values.
CTA
A button or link that encourages users to take action. Stands for Call To Action.
Custom Code
Code designed specifically to add features beyond your platform's standard options.
Cybersecurity
Protecting computers, networks, and data from digital attacks and unauthorized access.
Dashboard
A quick view of important data and metrics.
Data flow
How information moves between systems.
Data Mapping
The process of matching information from one system to the right fields in another system.
Data Scraping
Automatically collecting information from websites instead of copying it manually.
Database
A structured collection of data.
Deep Learning
A type of machine learning using neural networks with multiple layers to process complex patterns.
Descender
The part of a letter that drops below the baseline.
Design system
A reusable set of rules, components, and styles.
Desktop App
Software installed on your computer, running outside your web browser.
Discount code
A code customers enter at checkout for a price reduction or special offer.
